An Englewood neighborhood man has been charged with the fatal stabbing of another man in June on the Far South Side Fernwood neighborhood.

Anthony Haynes, 30, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of 36-year-old Jason Tidwell, whose body was found June 28 inside a home in the 10600 block of South Lafayette, according to the Cook County state’s attorney’s office.

About 1 a.m. that morning, Tidwell and Haynes got into a fight that resulted in Tidwell knocking out one of Haynes’ teeth, Assistant State’s Attorney Jamison Berger said during a hearing Thursday at the Leighton Criminal Court Building.

Both men occasionally stayed with a person who lived in the block and Haynes threatened to return and kill Tidwell after the fight ended, Berger said. Chicago police officers responded to the fight, but Tidwell declined to pursue charges. Haynes then left to go purchase alcohol, which he drank and then went to his grandfather’s home.

At his grandfather’s house, Haynes got a gun and returned to the block about 3 a.m., Berger said. Haynes, who a witness said was known to carry “a large hunting knife,” returned to the home in the block where Tidwell was staying and repeatedly stabbed him as he slept, Berger said.

Tidwell was found unresponsive just before 7 a.m. and was pronounced dead at the scene, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office reported. His death was ruled a homicide.

Hayne’s allegedly admitted to stabbing Tidwell to a witness who also reported seeing Haynes wearing bloody clothes, Berger said. A search warrant was issued and blood clothes were found in Hayne’s car. Another search warrant for Haynes’ grandfather’s house resulted in the gun being found.

A warrant was issued for Haynes’ arrest Sept. 1 in connection with the stabbing and he was located in Magee, Mississippi and returned to Chicago to face the charges on Wednesday, according to court and police records.

Judge Michael Clancy ordered Haynes held without bail at the Cook County Jail and his next court date was scheduled for Sept. 27.

Goings left the scene and was found a block away, officials said. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died.

Surveillance video shows the moments before and after a Far South Side shooting in which a man was fatally shot Tuesday morning while attempting to rob a woman in the Fernwood neighborhood.

About 5:45 a.m., Laavion Goings, 19, approached the woman, 25, in the 500 block of West 103rd Street, displayed a weapon and tried to rob her, Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

The woman, who was a concealed-carry holder, took out her own weapon and fired one shot, striking Goings in the neck, authorities said.

Surveillance cameras at B & G Heinz Pharmacy in the area captured the lead up to the shooting and the aftermath.

One video shows a woman waiting at a bus stop, and a different angle shows a man round the corner as he approaches her. The videos then cut to a tense scene with both the man and woman running away in opposite directions.

Goings left the scene and was found a block away, officials said. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died. Goings lived about a block away from where he was shot.

An autopsy Wednesday found he died of a gunshot wound to his chest and his death was ruled a homicide, the medical examiner’s office said.

Police said the shooting remained under investigation, but no charges had been filed against the woman as of Tuesday evening.

Pharmacist Fred Trimuel has owned the pharmacy since 1968, and he says he isn’t surprised this type of violent incident would happen steps away from his front door.

“It happens all over this city,” Trimuel said. “It even happens in the best places.”

The difference this time, he said, was that the presumptive victim of the violence ended up being able to protect herself.

“I’m 100 percent with her,” the 79-year-old said. “I think this is one of the best ways to teach people you can’t just come up and take things.”

Authorities have identified a 19-year-old man who was shot to death early Tuesday when he attempted to rob a concealed-carry permit holder in Fernwood.

Laavion Goings had been released from Cook County Jail two months earlier after pleading guilty to a drug charge and was on probation at the time of the robbery, according to authorities.

Goings pleaded guilty Nov. 1 to possession of methamphetamine, Cook County court records showed. He had initially also faced six counts of aggravated battery to a peace officer in connection with the same case, but the charges were later dropped by prosecutors.

Laavion Goings | Cook County sheriff’s office

The charges stemmed from his arrest in June, when Goings was charged with possession of a controlled substance and attacking a police officer in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side.

He was taken into custody after being identified as the target of a search warrant about 6:50 p.m. on June 7, 2018 in the 5900 block of South Elizabeth Street, on charges of felony possession of a controlled substance, Chicago police said.

During the arrest, Goings allegedly pushed a police officer. He then caused damage to a CPD vehicle while being taken in for processing, police said.

He was additionally charged with aggravated battery of an officer, criminal damage to government property and resisting an officer, police said.

Goings was sentenced to community service and two-years probation on the drug charge and was still on probation when he approached the 25-year-old woman about 5:45 a.m. Tuesday at a bus shelter at 103rd and Wallace streets, according to authorities.

Chicago police said Goings tried to rob the woman at gunpoint, but she also pulled a gun and fired a shot, striking Goings in the neck.

Surveillance video recorded by a business across the street showed Goings and the woman run in opposite directions after the shooting.

Goings was found suffering from the bullet wound a block away, police said. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died.

Police said the woman had a valid permit to carry a concealed weapon and wasn’t facing charges related to the shooting Wednesday. The case remained under investigation.

ENDORSEMENT: Anthony A. Beale for 9th Ward alderman

Far South Side

Ald. Anthony Beale’s focus has been to bring development and opportunity to the 9th Ward. A highlight of his fifth term came just two months ago when the U.S. Bank Pullman Community Center opened. It is a $20 million, privately financed 135,000-square-foot sports, recreation and educational center at 10355 S. Woodlawn. Kids finally have a place to play baseball. There are other signs of progress: The Pullman Historic District is enjoying a renaissance since former President Barack Obama designated it a national monument in 2015. A year ago, a Whole Foods Midwest Distribution Center opened in the ward. Beale also worked to get a new 95th Street Red Line CTA station. He’s pushing for a Red Line extension to 130th Street to come to fruition. Yet, the alderman acknowledges there is work to do. Crime has dipped but remains a big issue. Investment in the ward is uneven; there are food deserts and blighted areas. Among four candidates in this race, Beale is by far the most qualified to lead the ward for the next four years. He has our endorsement over social worker Cleopatra Watson, police officer Paul Collins and former Chicago Public Schools counselor Essie Hall.
